THE TENNIS PORTAL

Tennis ball

Tennis is a sport played between either two players (singles) or two teams of two players each (doubles). Players use a stringed racquet to strike a ball, a hollow rubber sphere covered in felt, over a net into the opponent's court. In some places tennis is still called lawn tennis to distinguish it from real tennis (also known as royal tennis, court tennis or jeu de paume), an older form of the game that is played indoors on a very different kind of a court. Originating in England in the late 19th century AD, the game spread first throughout the English-speaking world, particularly among the upper classes. Tennis is now played in the Summer Olympic Games and at all levels of society, by individuals of all ages many countries around the world. Its rules have remained remarkably unchanged since the early 1900s. Along with its millions of players, tennis claims millions of people who follow the sport as spectators, being particularly interested in the four Grand Slam tournaments.

Nadal at 2006 Western & Southern Financial Group Masters Cincinnati, Ohio
Rafael Nadal (IPA: [rafa'el na'dal]) (born June 3, 1986, in Manacor, Mallorca) is a Spanish professional tennis player. He is ranked world number two 1, is a four-time singles French Open champion (2005-2008), a one-time singles champion at Wimbledon (2008), and one-time singles champion at the Australian Open (2009). He is also known as Rafa.

Nadal has a storied rivalry with Swiss champion Roger Federer, most notably for defeating him at the French Open in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008. Nadal denied Federer career and calendar year Grand Slams until 2009's French Open. In 2009, Nadal's record 31-match French Open winning streak ended with a fourth-round loss to Swedish player Robin Söderling. Federer then defeated Söderling in the final, completing his career Grand Slam.

From April 2005 to May 2007, Nadal won a record 81 consecutive clay court matches before being defeated by Federer in the 2007 Hamburg Masters final. This is the longest winning streak of any male player on a single surface in the open era. These achievements have led some spectators to regard Nadal as the greatest clay-court player in the history of the sport.2
